The Job Success Score is built from client satisfaction after contracts end. What goes into it, what the bands mean, and the habits that protect it.

Your Job Success Score is one of the numbers on your Upwork profile that clients and Upwork's search can see. Upwork explains how it works in its guide to improving your Job Success Score. Details can change, so check that page for the current rules; this is a plain-language summary.

What it is based on

The score reflects client satisfaction after your contracts end. Upwork describes feedback as being weighted by things like how long a contract was, how much it earned, the feedback itself and how long you worked with the client, so a long, well-reviewed relationship counts for more than a tiny one.

The bands

At the time of writing, Upwork describes 90% and above as excellent, 80 to 89% as good, and 79% or below as needing improvement. Treat these as a guide to how clients may read the number rather than a promise of how many jobs you will win.

Habits that protect it

  • Write project-specific proposals so you win work you are right for, which makes happy endings more likely.
  • Communicate early and clearly. Most unhappy endings start with silence or surprises.
  • Deliver what you promised and ask for feedback you can act on.
  • Build repeat relationships. Follow-up contracts with a happy client are the strongest signal.
  • Say no to the wrong jobs. A job that does not fit your skills or rate is a risk to your score.

Connect it to how you pick jobs

A high score is partly a result of choosing well. Filters for client quality, a clear bid rule and honest answers to screening questions all reduce the chance of a bad match.

With an agent. Let the agent score fit and apply client-quality filters, and read its reasons in the run log. Fewer poor matches in means fewer poor endings out.
