The parts of your Upwork profile clients read first
Clients see your photo, title and the first lines of your overview before anything else. How to make those few pieces do the work.
A client who is curious about your proposal clicks through to your profile, and decides in seconds whether to read more. A few elements get nearly all the attention. Upwork publishes its own advice on them in its freelancer profile tips; this is a short summary of the parts that matter most.
Your photo
Upwork recommends a clear headshot on a plain background, at least 250 by 250 pixels, with your face as the focus. Avoid sunglasses, text, logos and heavy editing. It is the first visual impression a client gets, so it should look like a person they could work with.
Your title
The title strongly influences whether someone clicks your profile or proposal. Say what you do and for whom, in plain words: "React Native developer for booking and delivery apps" says more than "Full-stack developer".
The first lines of your overview
Only the opening of your overview is visible before a client chooses to read more, around the first 250 characters according to Upwork's guide. Put the most important sentence there: who you help, what result you deliver and one piece of proof. Then keep the rest in short paragraphs or bullets.
An intro video
If you add one, Upwork suggests uploading it to YouTube with ads switched off and linking it from your profile. Keep it short, dress as you would for a client call, and use a clean background.
Availability and rate
Set weekly hours you can really keep. Upwork uses your availability when matching you to work, and a client who sees you answering and finishing on time will trust the rest.
A quick profile check
- Photo: clear, plain background, your face in focus.
- Title: what you do and for whom.
- Overview: the best sentence comes first.
- Two to four portfolio pieces that match the work you want.
- Availability you can honour.
