What MCP is, and why connecting to Upwork this way matters
The Model Context Protocol gives AI tools a standard way to use services like Upwork. Here is what that means for you in plain language.
If you have seen the letters MCP next to AI tools, they stand for the Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that describes how an AI application can connect to tools and data sources in a consistent way. You can read the specification at modelcontextprotocol.io.
The problem it solves
Before a shared standard, every connection between an AI tool and a service was custom work. Each one was built differently and each one could break differently. A standard means a service can describe what it can do once, and any compatible app can use it.
What this means for Upwork
Upwork offers an official MCP server. An app that connects to it asks Upwork what actions are available, such as searching jobs, reading messages or submitting a proposal, and then uses them on your behalf with the permissions you grant.
Signing in without sharing your password
The connection uses OAuth. You sign in on Upwork itself and approve access, and the app receives a token instead of your password. Tokens can be renewed and revoked, which is safer than handing over a password.
Why an official connection is better
- The actions it offers are the ones the platform has chosen to support.
- Access is something you grant and can withdraw.
- It does not depend on scraping pages that can change overnight.
