Spending Upwork Connects wisely: check the job before you apply

Connects are a cost, so every proposal is a small bet. A quick pre-apply check helps you spend them on jobs worth the odds.

On Upwork, submitting a proposal uses Connects, which freelancers pay for or receive according to Upwork's current rules. That makes each application a small bet. You cannot control the outcome, but you can improve the odds by spending Connects only on jobs that clear a quick check.

A thirty-second check

  1. Is the job a real fit? It matches your skills and the kind of work you want, not just a keyword.
  2. Is the client credible? Look at their history, spend and reviews. See spotting red flags.
  3. Is the budget workable? Compare it with your floor before you write a word.
  4. How much activity is there? A post that already has many proposals is a harder bet than a fresh one.
  5. Can you say something specific? If you cannot write a tailored opening, skip it.

Be early where it counts

Newer listings tend to get more attention, so a good proposal on a fresh post is a better use of Connects than a late one on a crowded post. See why speed matters.

Set a daily limit

Decide how many proposals you will send in a day and stick to it. A limit forces you to choose the best jobs instead of the first ones.

Learn from what you spent

Track proposals sent against replies. If one search term eats Connects and brings no replies, drop it. See tracking your win rate.

The price of Connects and the ways to earn them change over time. Check the Upwork Help Center for the current details rather than relying on older videos or posts.
